Constipation during Pregnancy & Postpartum

Constipation is categorized by hard or infrequent stools and is most likely caused by, you guessed it… a change in hormones!   Other reasons   may include crowding   of the digestive tract by the baby, inadequate amounts of fiber, and a lack of exercise.

The best way to avoid constipation during pregnancy: eat 25-35 grams of fiber each day.  However, increase to this goal slowly.  Begin with eating approximately 10 grams consistently for three or four days then increase that amount by 5 grams every other day. If you start to feel uncomfortable bloating make sure you are not going overboard  with the fiber and be sure you are drinking enough non-caffeinated fluids each day.

The most natural remedies for constipation include increasing your fiber (as mentioned above), exercise and increasing your non-caffeinated fluids (lots o’ water!)

  • Drink a minimum of ten, 8-ounce glasses of non-caffeinated drinks daily to increase fibers’ effect – you may need more fluid during warm months or if you are active.
  • Get regular physical activity to stimulate the digestive tract and promote regular bowel movements.
